Government introduces new bus legislation to give control back to local authorities

17th Dec 2024 – Introduced by the Government today, The Bus Services Bill will give local authorities control over routes, timetables, connections and fares.

The Bill is largely designed to boost further local control of the bus sector, with an emphasis on protecting lifeline services.

The plans will lift the ban on local authorities establishing their own bus companies, making it easier for them to control services and shape routes to work better for local people. The bill also empowers local authorities to work alongside private operators to improve bus services if they choose to not pursue full ownership.
