8% increase in light rail and tram passenger journeys in 2023/24

Released by the Department of Transport (DfT), annual statistics show passenger journeys on light rail and tram systems increased to 228.8 million 2023/24, an increase of 8% from the previous year. Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in the number of passenger journeys taken on light rail and tram systems.

In England, comparing the year ending March 2024 with the year ending March 2023:

  • 8 million passenger journeys, an increase of 8%
  • 4 million concessionary passenger journeys, an increase of 6%
  • £365.8 million of passenger revenue, an increase of 12%
  • £29.9 million of concessionary passenger revenue, an increase of 4%
